This is a truly sad announcement, for while I have fundamentally disagreed with Senator McCain over many issues, I’ve always believed that he is a true American. He’s been an icon of the Senate for decades, and his loss will be significant. I also fear that the Republicans in Arizona will end up appointing someone far more conservative and less reasonable in his place. With a diagnosis of glioblastoma and the median survival rate of just 14 months, even with aggressive chemo and radiation, I think it unlikely that McCain will return to the Senate except to say goodbye, despite his Twitter statement that he plans to return soon.
Personally, I hope that Senator McCain chooses to retire gracefully and spend the rest of his life with his family. He has served his country far above and beyond the call of duty.
