The Uselessness of Prayer
I grew up believing in God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the power of prayer, etc. but in all seriousness, it’s utter crap like this meme (originally used for Hurricane Matthew a couple years ago and now being circulated again for Hurricane Irma) that made me realize how useless prayer is. And really, if “god” responded to the prayers of Floridians a couple years ago by just diverting Matthew to smash into South and North Carolina instead, then my response is, “Fuck god for playing favorites.” Same with Hurricane Harvey in Texas.
And if, as many evangelical leaders claim, “god” is punishing the US for things like transgender and LGBTQ protections, but “God” didn’t see fit to stop Christians from nearly wiping out Native American civilizations, then that deity should be prosecuted for arbitrary and vicious crimes against humanity.
Besides that, people celebrating when their prayers allegedly divert a storm from hitting them and going to hit someone else instead? Yeah, fuck that, too.
No, Hurricanes Irma and Harvey, like all those storms before, don’t have one damned thing to do with “god.” They’re just the forces of nature, augmented and amplified by human global warming, which our current Trump administration still denies. Well, nature doesn’t give a shit about what we believe to be true or pray to be true, but it sure as hell is affected by what we DO.
