Something quite different from the previous articles I’ve shared to this new Collection, but it seems the best fit at the moment.
I don’t go out of my way to tell people, but I am an atheist. It’s not an easy thing to be, living in the Bible Belt as I have for the last 26 years. I grew up a devout Roman Catholic and didn’t begin to lose my faith until 14 years ago, with a final realization that I’m an atheist coming about 10 years ago. I enjoy aspects of Zen Buddhism and Taoism, but wouldn’t count myself as an actual follower.
I am often frustrated by fundamentalist religious mindsets of all denominations and sometimes wish that religion could die out completely. The current political climate in the USA is a particular driving force of that desire. However, I find the “new atheists” such as Dawkins to be equally odious at times. And as the author of this article states, eliminating religion from humanity might not even be a good idea. At least, humanity must evolve a lot farther before it would be a viable possibility.
