North Carolina is about to go down in history again, and again for all the wrong reasons.
I must speak out against what the NC Legislature is doing in Raleigh right now. I am appalled and disgusted and horrified by the blatant attempt to not only override the legally created LGBTQ ordinance passed by the Charlotte City Council, but to overturn DECADES of civil rights progress in our state.
If you follow the news, you already know that major corporations around the USA have demonstrated their willingness to abandon states that pass such discriminatory measures, causing the loss of millions in tax revenue, hundreds or thousands of high paying jobs, and destroying the reputation of the state as a place that is open to business and respecting of human rights. Well, if this bill passes in Raleigh today and Governor McCrory signs it – be prepared for the same to happen in our state.
We have already seen North Carolina’s film industry devastated by our current Legislature and Governor, and they are trying to do much the same to our state’s booming solar industry. But what will happen to our state if we appeal to our basest, most negative instincts and legally allow discrimination once again? Do we not remember the Civil Rights movement? Is Martin Luther King Day something we merely “say” we respect?
Make no mistake – to watch our state fall backwards into legalized discrimination against any group would be not just shameful, but potentially devastating to our economy.
Please call and email your State Senators and Representatives and tell them that this is NOT the will of the people of North Carolina. The House has already passed it, and the Senate most likely will, and McCrory has already said that he will sign it.
This is WRONG, and it will have devastating effects on the North Carolina economy when major corporations start pulling jobs, projects, and tax revenue from our state.
