I’m somewhat conflicted about this.
On the one hand, I agree with the Danish government’s position that the burqa and niqab, that both garments embody a view of women that is primitive, outmoded, inherently sexist and repressive, and there is no good reason for it in modern society. As both an atheist who sees no benefit to religion any more, and as a feminist, who believes that all women should have equal freedom to wear what they want, these garments are clearly not always a choice given Islamic culture.
On the other hand, government regulation of religious expression has some potentially dangerous implications. And since women should have the right to choose what they want to wear, this law is clearly a restriction of that freedom. Will it truly accomplish its goal, or will it backfire in some unforeseen way?
On balance, I come down on the side of the Danish government. If Islam as a whole won’t join the 21st century willingly, maybe they need a hard push. Also, there are still many ways to dress extremely conservatively and to wear the hijab, which accomplishes most of the same.
