I think this article did a pretty good job of summing up the conflicting reports about “The Last Jedi.”
I’ll admit, I left the theater with kind of mixed feelings, not quite sure what to think of it all. Overall, I really enjoyed it, but there was just a feeling of je ne sais quoi, that “I can’t quite put my finger on it.” The meme that I shared from SciBabe on FB earlier today put it more bluntly (I’ll add it in the comments), while this explores it more deeply.
Essentially, I liked it and disliked it for the same reasons. I both liked and disliked the similarities to, and the differences from, the originals. Having watched the originals in the theaters, I’m definitely tied tightly to the memories and emotions associated with them. I’m among those who basically ignore the prequels as abominations and never got into all the books, so I don’t care about the “extra-canonical” or “non-canonical” stuff. Intellectually, I know that a repetition of the originals with new characters would be boring, but I need a sense of continuity. While that sense is there, the new attitude and storytelling is just disruptive enough to throw me off.
Since leaving the theater, it’s been growing on me, enough that I can’t wait to see it again, hopefully in theaters.
Good article!
