Going 2 Days Without ADD Medication Sucks

Going 2 Days Without ADD Medication Sucks

One of the really irritating things about the stimulant-type ADD/ADHD medications, i.e. Ritalin, Adderall, Vyvanse, Methylphenidate, etc. is that they’re controlled substances. From a medical standpoint, this makes total sense, as they are controlled substances, amphetamines. From a practical standpoint, however, this can be quite inconvenient at times, because our physicians are only allowed to prescribe up to 3 months supply at a time, in 30-day increments. That means we have to get a new Rx from the pharmacy every 30 days, and every 90 days, we have to see our physician for refills, and sometimes the timing is rather inconvenient.

My next doctor’s visit is on May 31st. As of this past Friday, I only had enough pills left to get me to Sunday, May 28th, which would leave me 3 days short. Oh yeah, and I’m flying out of town the evening of May 31st, so I absolutely HAVE to get a refill that day. But I really can’t get a doctor’s visit any earlier due to work, which means that I’ll have to go for 3 days without, no matter what. And no, she can’t call in even 3 pills to get me through. Sucks, but that’s the DEA’s rule.

So I opted to skip 2 days this weekend and 1 day next weekend. That way, I’ll have my medication on all the days that I need it.

Come to think of it, I should call the pharmacy and request that they be sure and have enough in stock on the 31st, because of they don’t, and I can’t get it until I get back from my trip, that would REALLY suck.

There are some benefits to having and ADD/ADHD brain, but there are some really inconvenient drawbacks, too, and not having the medication that one needs to function normally is just an awful feeling.
