Actresses Hot for Science
Who knew science could be so attractive? 🙂 I know I know, very sexist of me, and I apologize….kinda. 🙂
But how cool is it that these actresses are putting their celebrity-hood to good use and promoting real science, STEM, etc? I think it’s awesome whenever ANYONE steps forward to educate the public, and given how many “bad” celebrities there are who do little to no good beyond building their own celebrity-hood….this is awesome. We need MORE celebrities – big and small – as well as everyone else to spread this message.
I have 2 daughters, in whom I do my best to instill critical thinking and an understanding of science and technology and how they impact our world. My oldest daughter is studying nutrition with an eye to becoming a Physician’s Assistant, which would be just awesome, and while I have no idea what Elizabeth will choose as a career, nothing could make me happier than to see her choose math or science, whether it be physics, biology, chemistry, or who knows what specialization that may not even exist yet. I will certainly be looking for role models like these women to inspire her and excite her imagination; to let her know that yes – women ARE excellent in STEM.
Philip Plait published a thoughtful article today on the pitfalls and opportunities of celebrity endorsement of science that’s also worth reading: http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2014/12/19/mayim_bialik_actress_scientist_alt_med_believer.html It’s not like all scientists/celebrities, male or female, are of equal stature, and some may be worthy of respect in some areas but not others..but to have women role models in science is crucial.
So to these women the Scirens – bravo!
